How long does an MOT take?

An MOT typically takes around an hour, however if minor repairs are required then the process can take longer. We’ll always advise as to how long any consequent work will require

Use our online booking tool by simply entering in your registration, and you can check when your car MOT date is coming up. You can book up to 28 days before your MOT is due so that you get a full 13 months MOT cover.

What checks does an MOT undertake?

An MOT is a test that ensures a car is safe to be on the road. Key areas that are checked during the process include:

  • Driver’s view of the road
  • Windscreen Mirrors and wipers
  • Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment
  • Electrical wiring
  • Lights
  • Battery
  • Vehicles with a tow bar
  • Horn
  • Steering and suspension
  • Exhaust, fuel and emissions
  • Emissions
  • Fuel system
  • Exhaust system
  • Brakes
  • Tyres and road wheels
  • Body, structure and general items
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Registration plates
  • Speedometer
  • Body
  • Seat belts and restraint systems

If your car fails on any of these pointers, then this will result in an MOT failure. Work will then need to be undertaken before your car is re-tested. Should your car fail we’ll always provide you with an easy to read report as to what, exactly, is the issue (or issues). We don’t ever undertake necessary repairs unless we’ve provided you with a quote (which includes parts, labour and VAT) and you’ve then given us the green light to get to work. Of the elements checked during an MOT, the most failures are due to lights (30%); followed by: tyres (10%); brakes (9.6%) and the driver’s view of the road (6.6%).

Ensure that your vehicle is comprehensively maintained

Many of our customers choose to put their vehicle through a full service at the same time as they have their MOT. Choosing to do this ensures that your car benefits from the regular checks and essential maintenance tasks that keep your car running as it should for as long as possible. It also means that you needn’t keep track of the date that you last put your car through a full service (which in itself may ensure that you protect your warranty).
